We will be stopping for a day at Odessa in Sept on a Cruise ship. We are leaving in 10 days. We opted for independent touring rather than the packaged shore excursion. Because we are specifically interested in the Jewish history of Odessa, (like some others of the forum writers) we contacted sources for Jewish tours, whose names we obtained on this forum many months ago. This has been an incredibly interesting experience: ie wild enthusiasm with promises of service, followed by dead silence comparable to the life in the tomb. No response to emails, no phone service or fax service that works, contrasted with richly detailed web sites that offer everything but an address.
This may turn out to be funny as they say when we look back on it, but I am still wondering about whether we should walk aimlessly (our walking stamina is not unlimited) or try for an English speaking guide and if so whom to trust.
Any insights would be welcome.
Thanks to any respondents,
Carol

As I was planning for a cruise this passed May, I was in the same situation, that is, looking for a guide in a city that I had never been to. I went to American Express' travel website because I thought it was a reliable place to start. I don't believe it asked me for my card number, so I assume that any and all can use their services. It asked specifically what destination I required information and service for, then my name was forwarded to an expert travel consultant for that area. The gal that helped me by e-mail could not actually book her recommended guide for me because the company did not accept American Express charges. To her credit, she gave me the name and contact information even though she would not earn anything on it. The travel company was responsive and thorough. I pre-paid the entire amount, but would have been able to pre-pay a portion if I wanted to (to be prudent, I probably should have done this). I confirmed my reservation by e-mail from the ship the day before we docked. Although I was very nervous that no guide would be waiting for me, I was one of the first off the ship. There was the guide, not just prompt, but early, and with a car that still smelled brand new.
I tell you this long story to demonstrate my belief in the reliability of American Express. I think they know their business and can help you find a guide for Odessa.
Suggest you pick up a guide book to the Ukraine (either Bradt or Lonely Planet) and do it yourself. Did the now-silent tour outfits come up with any itineraries? Note that in this part of Ukraine Russian is more popular than Ukrainian. And Odessa has good public transport.
Thank you to both respondents. I am broadening my search. In addition, I will contact American Express, would have never thought of it, and will search the travel book sections for appropriate aid. Might be cheaper than a tour.
