European Travel - Trivia Quiz #151

Today's quiz a potpourri of things!

1- The ????? was a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds and their market towns. Growing from a few North German towns in the late 1100s, the League came to dominate Baltic maritime trade for four centuries along the coast of Northern Europe.

What was the name of this League and name a couple of members?

2- Two famous Dutch cheeses were named after Dutch regional towns (I presume and not the other way around!):

3- Name the 5 Cinque Terre Lands (towns) in order- either way.

4- In what European capital can you tour the Bock Casements?

5- Visitors to Rome have a tradition of sticking their hands in the mouth of this large marble mask affixed to the outdoor entry wall of a small church near the Forum - what is the mask's name in Italian and English.

6- Some episodes of Dr Who, the British TV show, were filmed in these caves in the southeast London area.

7- Why would one go to Mt Valerian on the edge of Paris - to not only take in the expansive views over Paris but to visit what two shrines or memorials?

8- Why would one want to visit Conflans-Ste-Honore along the Seine northwest of Paris - its main draw?

9- You can surf board in this Munich park! What is it and what is one other prominent landmark in this park?

10- What was unique about the now removed Talgo night trains between Madrid and Barcelona and Paris? (Why could they run between these cities whereas conventional trains could not?)

Good luck -it's all in fun!

#1 In Germany there are Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck. Their car number plates even today start with 'H' to denote their former status and civic pride: HH - Hansestadt Hamburg, HB - Hansestadt Bremen, HL - Hansestadt Lübeck etc.
#3 Hastings, New Romney (later replaced by Rye), Hythe, Dover,
Sandwich.
#5 La Bocca della Verità (The Mouth of Truth) in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.
#8 At a confluence of the rivers Seine and Oise. Why do you want to visit? Centre of inland waterways in the Île de France? I think there is a festival there in the summer.

#10 As stated, to adjust to different gauges in use. Nowadays the French and Spanish high-speed trains both run on the standard gauge of 1,435 millimetres, so variable gauge train like Talgo became redundant.

#3 Hastings, New Romney (later replaced by Rye), Hythe, Dover,

OK for England I guess -5 Ports but I mean Cinque Terre in Italy -the one Rick Steves created!

But we'll give Alec credit for a right answer to #3.

7. Memorial de la France combattante.>

1/2 right - place where many French resistance blokes were killed by Nazis -now a memorial to them but not the only memorial up there -one predates the one WoeinParis gave by a few decades.

#8 At a confluence of the rivers Seine and Oise. Why do you want to visit? Centre of inland waterways in the Île de France? I think there is a festival there in the summer.>

Well kind of I guess we'll accept it - was looking for where there are zillions of barges tied up- yes because at confluence of Seine and Oise - there is a festival I believe for penichistes (made up French!)

So all questions right except for Italian version of Cinq

Yes!

All done except 1/2 of #7. I always forget Manarola!

It's a wrap!

Chiselhurst Caves rarely are talked about it seems and bits of several films and shows have used them:

Overground train from London.

Bonus cheese question (with your permission, Pal)

Which three European countries can claim that this cheese originated within (their present day) borders, and what's its name?
Hint: You do not need perfect vision to identify this cheese.
