Europe Itinerary for 2 weeks

Hi,

I've prepared a rough itinerary to cover quite a few places in Europe across 15-16 days in first 2 weeks of September. Need a little help to finalize it.

Take a flight from New Delhi (India) and spend first 3 days in Prague, take a bus to Munich and do half a day worth of sightseeing. Rent a car from Munich next day and drive through Bavarian Alps and reach Switzerland over the next 2 days (1 night halt in the Alps somewhere).

Spend 4 days and 5 nights in Switzerland and cover various places like Zermatt, Interlaken, Thun, Jungfrau, Lake Lucerne etc.

Then take the car back to Munich through other side of Bavarian Alps with one night halt (Lindau, Nesselwang, Hohenschwangau, Steingaden etc.) and reach Munich to drop off the car.

Here onwards I have 3 days that are not yet finalized.

Initially I had thought of taking the overnight train to Amsterdam and spend the last 3 days there. Probably take a day trip to Leiden if we get bored. Now the only reason I'm skeptic of Amsterdam is because I feel it might be too modern for us to include in our itinerary.

Other options that have put me in dilemma are Rome or Venice in Italy. Now is Venice too overrated because of being featured in movies? Is Amsterdam going to be too dull in September. Is Rome too much of architecture only.

What we need a little bit of mixture of history, water (canals or beaches) and excellent weather to roam around leisurely.

Any other ideas guys?

Thanks & Regards,
Vikram

I think you are already too jaded for this trip. ;o)

Yes, you are trying to cover way too many places in way too little time.

How many days do you actually have on the ground - not counting the day you arrive and the day you depart?

You are racing around in a sort of forced march and after the trip I think you will find everything is a gigantic blur.

Also you are not allowing for weather (what will you do when it rains?) or giving yourself time to get from one place/area to another.

As for Amsterdam being modern - yes, there are some places that are modern. But also whole sections of the city has canals lined with traditional merchant's houses from the 16/17th century when Amsterdam was one of the few places dominated by wealthy merchant commoners rather than a royal family (many of these houses are now museums).

I agree that you are trying to move around too fast, not allowing for time to get from one place to another and not stopping to enjoy the experience. I suggest that you do either a trip to Amsterdam (not too modern) or a trip to Venice (NOT overrated) - don't know where you get these ideas!

If it were my trip (and of course it is not), I would plan to spend the 15/16 days in Prague, Germany and Switzerland so you can actually get a feel for these places and enjoy them.

If you have a nationality requiring a Schengen visa then you need to have every night booked and accounted for before you apply for the visa. You do not have the luxury of winging it at all.
