Europe Itinary comments pls
We are (family of 4 - 2 teenage girls) travelling to Europe in July from Australia. We are arriving in Florence from London.
Day 1 Florence
Day 2 Florence - travel to Venice
Day 3 Venice - eve flight to Frankfurt Hahn
Day 4 Rhineland - River cruise - o/nite Heidelberg
Day 5 Drive to Paris
Day 6 Paris
Day 7 Paris (possibly drive 100-200 km out for o/nite stay - any suggestions?
Day 8 Drive to Lucerne/ Interlaken
Day 9 Drive to Garmisch-P
Day 10 German castles (Fussen) - O/nite Rotenberg or near by
Day 11-12 Berlin
Day 13 Return journey to OZ
We know it is a bit of a whirl wind trip. We are interested in the scenery, rather than big cities. We have driven in US but not in Europe.
Appreciate any suggestions of possible places to stop / stay. Hotel sugggestions (budget 200 euros per night).

Hi hemant,
>We know it is a bit of a whirl wind trip.<
You have set a new standard for Australian understatement.
May I suggest that you skip Italy?
You are flying into Florence and out of Venice. You will have 1 day in Florence and one day in Venice. You will not see scenery and you will not have enough time in either city.
Add the time to Paris.

That seems to be quite an understatement. I don't know how you are ever going to recover from jet lag or even see anything at all of Florence, Paris, Venice, Berlin or really anything else.
If your interest is in scenery and not big cities, then I don't understand why you are moving to a new big city almost every day or two. Why not just concentrate on seeing one area - like the Italian lakes with a bit of Switzerland and Austria - for the entire time? As it is, you're spending the bulk of your time in transit from one place to another.

Congratulations on your proposed journey and on your first post.
I would suggest you take a look at Ibis Hotels for the style of travel you hint.
Be sure to hang tight to your Michelin Guide for your driving.
Stop where you see something of interest to you and your family. You will not have time to try and do the stops that some may suggest so impulse will be your guide.
A trip report when you return is nice to share. Have your girls get journals and start the writing now as you all plan and prepare.
Your successful trip may be an inspiration for some.

hemant: your plan is, as you've gathered, pretty insane.
"We are interested in the scenery, rather than big cities."
I'm baffled - why are you going to Paris and Berlin if this is so?
Assuming you have tix in and out of Florence, here's what I suggest for a do-able whirlwind:
Days 1-5: in Florence and Venice; fly out night of 5th.
Day 6-8: get car at Hahn, see the Rhineland between Koblenz and Bingen. Forget Heidelberg.
Days 9-11 : Rothenburg, Garmisch; you'll want time to tour the Bavarian Alps if you like scenery.
Day 12: Drop car in Germany to avoid big charges fro dropping in Italy. Take a train ride across the alps and on to Florence for overnight prior to departure.

I hear you. The idea for the plan came from looking at Bus tours and did not realise it would be too hectic. Thanks for your thoughts though.
I am now thinking of
Day 1 -3 Florence
Fly to Germany from Pisa Airport
Rent a car
Day 4-10 Germany(HAHN) (Rhine river, Castles near Austrian border)
Day 10 Fly to Paris evening
Day 11-13 Paris - Commence retun journey from Paris
I hope this is better paced than before. Appreciate suggestions on how best to plan the Germany leg. If we want to get a look at the Alps, would this be possible?

I laughed a little at your response.
I STILL look at bus tour itineries to get an idea of what is posssible.
I was in Switzerland last month...see what you can work out. I suggest you go with your initial thoughts...knowing you would not spend loads of time in any one place and split your time in Germany with some time in Switzerland.
Two flights in two weeks...Did you get that Micheline guide yet?
