My Dad was in basic training and his group was split in two - one half to Alaska Aleutians and the other half to Battle of Bulge area.
He was glad to be in the Aleutians.
the chances of life!

No Sitka I believe - bit boring but fairly safe - especially in winter with total darkness - sad story a aviator was shot down and severely wounded - my dad had a rare blood type same as injured guy and it was Christmas Day and they hooked my dad right up to the guy - straight blood transfer but the poor guy died on the table - my dad said 'that didn't have to happen on Christmas Day' (or any day but more poignant because of Christmas Day. War is hell.

So, maybe he was in the navy?
My dad and uncle were on Attu and Kiska. Small world.
Sad story about the pilot on Christmas Day; yes, war is hell. It certainly seemed to be the defining moment for those who were in it.

Nope Army- anti-aircraft artillery.
Maybe your dad talked about the boat ride from Seattle to Aleutians - they thought they were going down all the time!
