Euro Quiz # 74 - Potpurri and Lakes!

Jump to last reply

1- What is Switzerland's largest lake wholly inside Switzerland and the next two largest that are wholly inside Switzerland?

2- At Grindelwald, Switzerland in the Jungfrau Region there are two high points on each side of the bowl-like amphitheatre Grindelwald sits in the middle of - One is called Little and the other Big - what are the two whole names in German?

3- What is meant by dynamic conversion in terms of giving someone a poorer exchange rate when paying by credit or debit card for something like a hotel room?

4- When did or does Daylight Savings Time start for western Europe?

5- The first transmission from (1)???????? (London area's main BBC TV transmitting tower) took place on 28 March 1956, when it succeeded the transmitter at (2) ?????????? where the BBC had started the world's first scheduled television service in November 1936. In November 1956 the first color test transmissions began from (1) ????????? relaying live pictures from the studios at (2) ???????? after BBC TV had closed down for the night. In May 1958 the first experimental Band V 625-line transmissions started from ???????

Q - where was the older BBC TV tower located and where was it moved to (not physically perhaps)? Each has a similar word in their names and top high hills, one in southern London and one in northern London?

6- What major Catholic holidays are official holidays in most Catholic European countries, or like in Germany in Catholic areas of a country?

7- .What are Italy's four largest lakes, in order - including those extending into other countries.

8- What are the four largest Greek islands, in order?

9- What lake in the Lake District was the scene of a world water speed record?

10 - Height is not the only way to measure waterfalls. When it comes to the amount of water flowing over them, nowhere else in Europe can compete with the ??????? Falls -
the falls are a mere 23 metres high, but 150 metres wide. They are at their most impressive in summer, when about 600,000 litres of water go over per second. The greatest ever flow was measured in 1965: 1,250,000 litres per second.

This is tiny in comparison with the world's giants - the Niagara carries six times as much, and the world's largest, the Inga Falls on the Congo river (actually a series of rapids, so not everyone thinks they count) 115 times – but Europe is not a continent of large falls.

The ????????? are the biggest not only in ???? what country?), but also in the European continent as a whole, with rivals only in Iceland.

Name the falls and their location and the river that tumbles over them?

NOTE: Tomorrow's quiz will be very different requiring participation from several folks - that is unless someone decides to post their own quiz beforehand. Thus the end of the string of these type daily quizzes perhaps - in line with percy's thinking a while back.
