Eurail pass or not to pass
Im going on my first European vacation this month. I am going to be flying into Venice and taking the train to Florence, then to Montorossa for the day, back to Florence, and finally to Rome. Should I purchase a Eurail pass here in San Diego for $163 US dollars? It will allow me to jump on 5 times. or should I purchase them as I go? What would be cheaper? Easier?
I am no veterana, so any suggestions would help

...are you talking about a eurail pass or a pass limited to the italian rail system? I certainly would check out a pass on the italian rail system and compare that price with trips as outlined in your note and then factor in convenience.

Go to www.railpass.com or www.railsaver.com and input your proposed itinerary. You can find out if a pass would be cheaper than buying point to point tickets.

patriciag,
Looks like you're talking about the Italian railpass, 2nd class.
It's a tossup. You would probably save a few bucks buying point to point as you go. But your travel will be easier with the pass, as you can just hop on any time without bothering with the ticketing process. You're not limited to jumping on "5 times;" once your pass is punched for that day, you can get on and off as many times as you like before midnight.
Even with the pass, it might be worthwhile to purchase a point-to-point ticket on a day when you're only making one short trip and save the "pass day" for something more substantial.
