Eternal debate - Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast?

Apologies at the outset - recurring question, I know! Please help decide where to stay at the Amalfi for 3-4 nights for an active family of four in June/July. We won't have a car.

Itinerary for AC:
Naples - 2/3N
AC - 3/4N (via private transfer)
Bus (or ferry) to Salerno and train to Rome (more questions on that later!)

Naples - 2/3N as base to explore Pompeii/Vesuvius/Herculaneum for a full day. Plus, catacombs, two museums and pizzas.

AC - undecided between Positano/Amalfi/Atrani/Prairno/Maoiri for 3-4 nights. Happy to do apartment/villa or hotel. Would like to keep costs around 200/250E a night.

Planning to hike/walk/explore the Walk of the Gods, Valley of the Mills plus any other, eat well, soak in the views and relax with a ferry ride or two thrown in (not Capri, though)

I don't mind stairs but steep stairs for a good meal after a day of hiking is avoidable. So, leaning towards Amalfi. But increasingly feel that Prairno or Atrani or Maoiri look promising in terms of the walks/views, costs and "far from the madding crowds" before we hit Rome/Florence/Venice.

Started late on the planning and beginning to panic - please help!

TIA

Before wedding yourself to any particular town I would start looking today at what lodgings are available.

You don;t mention how many you are, what bed configuration you need to what your nightly budget it is - but this is an incredibly busy time o fyear and many properties are already full for your dates.

So I would start with a search to see what places may have availability for your dates/price and work backward from there. There is no point in deciding you MUST be in Positano and then finding the properties that are left are all above you budget.

I agree with the above. You will probably need to schedule this around what's available. It's very late for booking this summer.

IT IS VERY LATE to secure hotel reservations for Positano, Capri, & assuming Amalfi, etc.

I suggest booking your hotel reservations (ASAP) you may have to first work with what is available and then plan around that.
Your choices of what is available may be more challenging then you would like.

Good Luck!!!!! The Amalfi Coast is just beautiful with wonderful dramatic views, not to be missed........
but very popular destination......secure your reservations NOW.

Agree with the above. But one of the issues with staying in a town like Praiano or Maiori is that you are dependent on the SITA bus to get around, or at least to get to Positano or Amalfi to catch the ferry.

Thank you nytraveler and co. - bolted into action and have booked the Residenza Luce in Amalfi. It may not have a great seaview but has rave reviews! I hope we are able to access the walks planned, Positano and the AC.

There are places available in Agerola, Cocina and Atrani but this seemed the safest choice.

Good job tongsa. Nice location in town. You can easily walk to the ferry dock and to catch the bus up to Bomerano for the walk of the gods.

For a nice sea view, have lunch at Lido Azzuro on the water in the harbor. One of our favorites on the AC.
