I'm thinking of flying from Philadelphia to Venice then train to Florence and then to Rome and flying back to Philadelphia for a 12 day stay. No first class hotels or restaurants. Just a normal middle of the road travel accommodations doing normal tourist attractions. Can anyone give me an estimate on air, hotel per night $, food per day $, train $. I know everyone's idea of normal may not be the same but looking for an average. Also I'm thinking of early September 2012 time frame. Thanks so much.

For hotels, you really need to decide what you want. Fist class in the US would be 4+ or 5 star in the US. Standard business in the US is 4* in the US. Tourist in the US is 3* in Europe. 2* in europe would be super budget in the US. 1* in europe is typically not found in the US.
I major cities in Italy I think you will have trouble finding a 3* (tourist) hotel in a central location for 80 to 85 euros. So - you need to decide if you need elevators, air conditioning, full private bath in a central location. That will help figure out what you will have to pay for a hotel.
September in Italy is mid-to-high season. You will only find very budget hotels at the prices everyone has listed so far. Current train price (high speed) Venice/Florence is 43€ and Florence/Rome 45€. These prices will probably go up a few euro when the new schedules come out this Dec and next June.
For Sep travel in 2012 I would plan on $6000 including airfare unless you are a single person---then, I would plan on $4500.
