I would recommend staying in Bunratty. If you haven't seen the castle, folk park, Durty Nellies, Mac's pub, plus last minute Bunratty shopping right across the street from the castle all can take up your time the night before.

Ennis not Limerick. Ennis is a nicer town and smaller that Limerick. To be honest I do go to Limerick to see friends but I would never recommend it for a tourist. There is nothing there of tourist interest to see. Ennis is quainter.
Bunraty would be a nice stop as well.

Limerick is livlier at night - check out John's castle, also try the SHEBEEN at George Hotel on the main st for irish traditional music - great craic (means fun & laughter). Many Catholic churches to visit - jesuits, dominicans, francisicans, augustinians etc.Good hotel in Ennis is 'West County' but is 10min walk into town centre. Have fun.

I really enjoy Ennis and we've often stayed there on our last night. (I usually figure on about 30 minutes to Shannon.) Ennis isn't very big, but it's quite lively. If you stay in town, you won't need your car at all. It's a very walkable town. Several good restaurants and some very good pubs, often with music.
