This was our first extended visit to the Oxford region since I left 34 years ago. At that time, Britain was one of the foremost technological advanced countries in the world. It also had a rich, traditional heritage, full of pomp and ceremony and its country villages oozed old world charm.
So going back to my old stomping grounds near Oxford was not only to see how the region had fared, but also to see if that special feeling we experienced in being part of the English way of life for 10 years still remained. I wanted to be a tourist and revisit some of the top tourist places, and visit a few good English restaurants. In 2007, I, too, returned to England where I had been a post-graduate student, London, some 35 years before. I'm looking forward to your Part 2.
I can still ride a bike from Oxford Station to Magdalen in under 5 minutes. 35 years ago it was always difficult to get a car through town but the council decided to make it far worse if not impossible.

The people of Oxford decided they were sick of cars ruining their city.
On this issue, "the council" has been merely following its voters' instructions for the past 40 years. If that upsets Australian tourists with absurdly deluded memories about the costs, railway speeds and technological competence in 1980s Oxfordshire, tough.
Ah my spy in one of Oxford's bus companies has a different theory, but clearly there are laws of libel to be taken into account.
Equally I would have thought "Cowley" had been punishment enough.
