Eger or Pecs for the day?

I'll arrive in Budapest on 20 Dec and will depart on 27 Dec. I'll have a rental car and am planning a day trip to the Danube Bend but would also like to leave the city one additional day. I initially planned to go to Eger on 23 Dec, but the more I researched Pecs, the more intrigued I became. Could anyone please give me feedback on which town is more enjoyable for a day trip? Thank you.

In 2006, I visited Pecs as daytrip from Budapest, and stayed at Eger(both by train) for several days as base to touring around that area.

You can't go wrong with either, as both have interesting old twon and museums. Eger is a bit shorter in distance(if weather is not good, it can be a bit difficult driving in the winter, as I remember they didn't clean up the snow as fast as NE america). But,If you are into medieval architecture, pecs is far more interesting.

Thanks Judy,

Good point about the winter driving. Something I didn't consider but will now.

We spent a day in Eger and two in Pecs. They're different. Pecs has a terrific ceramic museum (Zolnay)so if that's an interest, go with Pecs. They have a couple of other museums as well (the modern art one is pretty good - especially for the Hungarians you won't see in other places. The city center is pretty, especially the pedestrian only area.
Eger is also very nice - but it's more of a walking around city that might not be that easy in late December. The Cathedral is impressive, but that's not going to take that long to see. The University is interesting as well with it's camera obscura at the top that gives you a 360 view of the pretty countryside. The castle is also "nice" - good not great. So, each adds up to a good, full day BUT, we did it in early May.
So, I'd go for Pecs in December. More things to see in a compact, indoor setting. (I don't know the cost/benefit of driving -and parking- but there are many easy trains to Pecs. Consider leaving the car in Budapest.)
