We (two parents and children ages 14, 11, and 9) are thinking about spending a day at Efteling on the way from Heerlen to Amsterdam, at the end of June. We would spend one night at the Efteling Hotel, and then make our way north the next afternoon. This would be toward the end of our month long trip, a break from the museums and monuments for a bit of pure fun, before we head home. Has anyone been recently? Do you think it's worth the time and effort, and will children at those ages enjoy the park? Thanks in advance!
Efteling!

Your children should enjoy it. They are old enough to go on the big rides, but young enough to enjoy some of the other aspects of de Efteling.
We, (Couple in our 50s/60s) went a couple of years ago for DH's companies birthday bash. We're not theme park people but we enjoyed it too.
Have a look at other hotels in the area which may be cheaper than de Efteling hotel.
An alternative stop which you might consider is Beekse Bergen Safari Park - you can walk amongst some of the animals too. Several hotels in the area offer special deals on the Safari Park and overnight stay.
Sadly the website seems to only be in Dutch - but you can get an idea of it: http://www.safaripark.nl/
If you Google Beekse Bergen Overnight you will get some hotel packages.
My husband and I were there with our Dutch nieces and nephews a few years ago. They range in age from 7 to 18, love going to theme parks and were thrilled that we were taking them there. We enjoyed it, too. What stood out to me was that it was not as "manufactured" looking as say, Disneyland (don't get me wrong, I'm a big Disney fan). It was more of a green, park-like setting with rides and roller coasters.
Bobbejaanland is another theme park (in Belgium) that my older nephews like better, but it's not as much on the way en route to Amsterdam. If you want to check it out, here's the link to their site:

Have fun!
