Edinburgh to Londo
We are planning a train trip from Edinburgh to London in July for 2 weeks. We plan to visit Glasgow and Bath, but are undecided on other trips. We are considering either Liverpool or Cardiff. Any thoughts on which one to choose?

Liverpool would fit into your tour de Britain very well - Cardiff would be more travel but who can tell which you would like best? I suspect many would prefer Cardiff unless Beatles fans but Liverpool is not just a big city as you might think but is an amazing large city whose joys may not be apparent at first glance.
anyway for train info check www.nationalrail.co.uk for train schedules and tickets - you can get nifty discounts by booking far in advance - full fare fully flexible tickets can cost a fortune - if wanting that freedom look at some kind of BritRail Pass which lets you hop any train any time - but it would be cheaper if you book discounted tickets - which can be hard to change so kind of set in stone - weeks in advance to get as they are sold in limited numbers - great sites for info on British trains: www.seat61.com- great info on discounted tickets; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
Discounted tickets come in first class too and sometimes at not much more than the cheapest available standard (2nd) class tickets available and IME of traveling on British trains for centuries there is a big difference in comfort between the classes - much greater than trains on the Continent IMO.

Are you saying that you have two weeks for the whole trip including time in Edinburgh and London, or is it two weeks to travel between the two?
Time spent in each place and the number of stops will depend on the above, but maybe:
Glasgow
Lake district
Manchester (day trip to Liverpool)
Cotswolds
Bath
London
Six stops will work for what is essentially a road trip in two weeks, but it needs cutting down if you have fewer days.

gnomes853 - did not mention the Lake District but that is a natural stop when coming down the West Coast Line from Glasgow - and you do not need a car there either - lots of buses circulating to main spots and a walker's Nirvana.
