Edinburgh by train: from London
I am planning to go to Edinburgh in June. I was thinking in taking a plane in France on a Friday morning, arriving in London at 9:00 am. I would stay the day and go to Edinburgh at night, by train, to arrive there on Saturday morning. After one day in Edinburgh, at night, I would take the train back to London and on Sunday night the plane to Paris. Good or bad idea???

Dear Guga:
I had a much-too-short visit to these cities a couple of months ago. I found it just as reasonable and much quicker just to take a round-trip flight. Particularly when you consider the cost of a sleeping couchette and the short amount of time you have, you may want to consider a flight. It was actually cheaper to fly than to go by rail when I checked prices. Have a great time -- I figure a little of both cities is better than none at all!

It is do-able, but you might get tired and not get the best deals on the trains and planes.
If you do want to get a train, you should be able to get a sleeper from London to Edinburgh for about £50 if you book ahead. You could get a return on the sleeper for about £80, but if you are flying from Paris to Edinburgh, you might get a cheaper deal that way.
Try www.iflybritishmidland.com to see if they do that route. British Airways should fly that route too, and perhaps Ryanair (www.ryanair.com)
For the train information, try a search for Scotrail.
