Edinburg for 24 hous

Hi, we will be in Edinburgh November 23 for one night. What should we make a point to see?

Your heading says 24 hours; your text, one night. When do yo arrive and when do you leave?

Walk the length of the Royal Mile, plenty to see and do on & within a few hundred yards of it.

I would second the Royal Mile from the Castle down to Holyrood Palace with sights in between.
In November the Castle opens at 930am and closes at 5pm, last admission is at 4pm
Holyrood is open 930am to 430pm with last admission at 315pm
Given your schedule you would only be able to go inside one or the other.

If you are arriving/departing by train you will be in the city center. If you are flying in or out you will have less time.

In late November the number of daylight hours is rather limited sunrise is late and sunset is pretty early, around 4pm.

OK; well given that, and given the lack of daylight, I would start with the castle. Do the outside whilst there's light, then the Crown Jewels and whatever else is on inside afterwards.

I would say you should walk down the High Street (part of the Royal Mile), but, having failed to get to it last weekend, when I was there for the Festival, I became very clear how much tourist rubbish is there. You still have to do it- lots and lost of lovely wee lanes ("closes") and steps and eery bits run off it in the New Town. YOU might want to do Mary King's Close (last tour 5pm on a weekday; 9pm at weekends) or a ghost tour at night.

Edinburgh has masses and masses of really good places to eat. Depending on what you like and where you're staying...Also masses of entertainment of all sorts. Buy a copy of the List, which has a daily guide. I like traditional music and gravitate to Sandy Bell's, if I have a spare evening in Edinburgh.

In the daylight, the options are legion- just walk round the New Town and down Rose Street (personally, I think the Castle is best when looked at from a distance, rather than from inside, and from the New Town). Masses of great shopping. National Museum is a brilliant visit. I guess I should get back to Holyrood Palace- not been since I was a school (and primary school at that, so nearly 50 years), but it would not be my top pick.

If it's a clear day, you'd do worse than walk up Arthur's seat. If it's peeing down, maybe the National Gallery, or the Dean Gallery.

Basically, it's a town for walking through and gawking at.

Can we sharpen our focus for you at all?
