In my local paper today was a column by Ed Perkins, that gave his review of the new Italo high speed trains. It's a 200 mph train, but note that it doesn't use the main train stations at Milan or Rome.

Trenitalia will be using Tiburtina more for some of it's high speed runs also.
I'm surprised at the comment about Amtrak. I didn't think Amtrak owned any lines and that was the reason it was late so often (having to stop and let priority trains pass).
The reporter praises "all" the modern comforts without mentioning whether there are "quiet" cars as exist elsewhere. For a deeper perspective he might have considered the public-private mixture that replaced British Rail some time ago, resulting in both strengths and weaknesses (including one notorious crash blamed on a private operator.)
