It's in the piazza. You don't need tickets.
For the seated section, you do. Apply through the Bishops' Office for US Visitors at http://www.pnac.org/pilgrim-information/bishops-office-for-us-visitors-to-the-vatican/. As demand greatly exceeds supply, they cannot guarantee tickets but will try. If you arrive early (around dawn), you may be able to stand just behind the seated area without tickets. Position yourself near the roadway (with barriers) that the Popemobile will go down for a good view. Mass will be relayed on giant TV screens.
