Easter 2006 on Crete - Questions
Hi all!
This family of 5 (teens, parents, Yiayia) will be in Greece for 11 days in April, including Easter weekend in Elounda Bay. Being of Greek descent, we would like to participate in both a Good Friday and Midnight Mass service within a 20 minute taxi ride of our hotel. We would especially love to know of any festivals that might occur after Midnight Mass in the early hours of Sunday! ??? Can anybody recommend a particular town? Or even a festive restaurant that would be serving lamb and traditional food after midnight Sunday?
Your thoughts, and any recommendations or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I assume you are there for Greek Easter (23rd April). I wouldn't rely on taxis as most people will be celebrating Easter with their families. There are usually church services in every church which often spread outside. At midnight on Saturday, candles are lit and people start celebrating. If you are staying in a hotel in Elounda, I would phone the hotel and find out what is going on in that area. If you can't find anything in the Elounda ? Ag. Nicolaos area, then Heraklion is probably your best bet. All of the big hotels have lots of British tourists and will have tours for their clients to various places. You will be able to ggo on any of these if you want (look out for Thomson Holidays / Thomas Cook / Cosmos / First Choice.
Good luck,
Carolena

I think you may be failing to get answers because a) by the traffic on here most people here got to West Crete; and b) Elounda's a pretty artificial community, I think.
You may get some answers on interkriti. If not try explorecrete.com

OP is back and raving about Elounda Bay Palace resort for Easter! More details to follow, but it was such an incredible experience to be in Greece for Easter.
We went to the Holy Trinity church in Agios Nikolous for Good Friday, and Sat night services on the hotel property (Elounda Beach side) at their small chapel, followed by fireworks. We skipped the Margaritsa dinner, but attended the big bash Sunday afternoon. They green was set up beautifully, and the food was spectacular. An absolutely gorgeous buffet of everything you could imagine! Greek music and dancing, too. It made for a perfect day.
No problem with taxis on Friday night, Saturday, or Monday. Not sure about Sat night or Sunday, as we stayed on property.
Just wanted this recommendation to pop up if anyone searches for Greek Easter or Crete for Easter in the future! Let me know if you have any questions. I'll post a more detailed trip report later.
