East Coast of Italy

Just curious--I don't hear much about the east coast of Italy, other than Venice. Any good tourist destinations along the coast between Ancona and Venice? Thanks.

Hi maire, I love the east coast of Italy. If nothing else I would strongly recommend you spend a few days in Ravenna.

Thanks, LoveItaly. Do you know if it would be less crowded in August than, say, Cinque Terre or Lake Como?

By train, I could get to Ravenna from Perugia via Florence/Bologna, or (times pretty similar) I could go via Foligno/Ancona/Rimini.

If we took the 2nd route, would we be riding along the coastline; would the views be good?

Hi Maire, I have been up and down the eastern coast several times but always by auto so I do not know about views from the trains unfortantly. I have never been to Ravenna in August but I would suspect that it would not be as crowded as the Cinque Terre or Lake Como, but that is a guess not a positive fact. I am sorry I can't give you definite answers but hopefully someone else here can.

I will tell you that Ravenna is a favorite of mine..I always enjoy being there. The months I have been in Ravenna has been May, June and September.

If you don't get answers regarding your questions this weekend don't get discouraged as Fodor's is usually not as busy on the weekends as the weekdays. Best wishes.

Thank you, LoveItaly! I appreciate your comments. Do you have a favorite hotel in Ravenna?

Years ago, a relative was in a coastal town near Venice which he loved. He said the views were amazing. (He swears it was Vicenza, but I don't think that's possible unless the town has moved ) That's what has me interested in the east coast.

Hi Maire, no I don't think he was staying in Vicenza either, LOL. But perhaps it was a hotel or resort with the name of Vicenza? I looked at the coastline on my map of Italy and I didn't find anywhere with a name similar to Vicenza btw.

Regarding the hotel, I couldn't remember the name but I found it via Google. It is the Hotel Argentario which is on Via Roma. That is a quick walk to all the various places you will want to visit and also to Piazza di Popolo which is Ravenna's outdoor "living room". A wonderful piazza to enjoy at the end of the day, have a drink and enjoy the people watching.

The hotel has always had a very nice staff. I will warn you that the rooms are small however. It is what I consider a typical "Italian hotel" and personally I have always enjoyed staying there.

Thanks, Loveitaly. Thanks for looking on your map and for finding your hotel.

Small rooms don't bother me as long as they're clean, but can you tell me what the shower is like? I am picky about those.

Hi Maire, I always found the hotel to be clean. Regarding the shower, not large..if a large bathroom or fantastic shower is important (that was one of my DH's gripes as much as he always loved being in Italy) than the hotel might not be the place for you. If you go to Google and type in Hotels in Ravenna, Italy you will see a lot of hotels. We always liked to stay in the center of Ravenna, especially after having wine in the piazza and wine with dinner etc. No driving, just walked back to the hotel.
Best wishes, I will sure look forward to your trip report!!
