I just did it on my own. I always go to these heavy tourist areas first thing in the morning..when they open. It turned out t be rather special. I ran into a couple who lived in the NE.They were of German descent. He was in the German army, captured and sent to aPOW camp in TX. He eturned to Germany, married and returned to the US and raised his family there and became US citizens.
We discussed many things, life in Germany at that time, the death camps, etc.
You can do it on your own.

Having been at the summit quite a few times, I agree. Earlier in the day is better because it is less crowded, however, if you can't see the summit from the town then don't waste your money. There is often early morning fog in the warm weather.
In combination with this, you can visit the documentation center which is nearby and the bunkers at Hotel zum Turken. Have a nice lunch just down the road at the guesthouse/restaurant Sonneck. Just by the Sonneck there is a summer rodelbahn for little kids. If you like to walk/hike, you can access the Mitte(Middle) Station for the Jenner chair lift just past the Sonneck. This is a great walk in good weather. You can take the chair at the middle station for the summit and return there if you wish.
You can also do the Rossfeldstrasse which is accessed just above the Hintereck parking lot behind where the busses pick you up for the Eagle's Nest. There are several places to stop and eat on the Rossfeld as well ( as long as it's good weather). A clear warm day on the Rossfeld is about as close to heaven as you can get!!!

I did it on my own and solo. I took the bus from the train station up the mountain. I think I bought my ticket at a shop by the Documentation Center. It's been a couple of years since I did it, so I could be wrong. You can take long as you want touring the house and outdoors. Beautiful views from there.

When we arrived at the entrance to Kehlsteinhaus, after riding up on the bus, we saw a sign for English tours. We were a little early for the next tour, so we waited a few minutes. The lady giving the tour spoke great English and spent about 30 or more minutes with our small group. This was in September and we had arrived around 11 AM so it wasn't too crowded. I think we paid 5 Euro for the tour plus a tip.
