We are planning a tour to Croatia and are wondering if we take a few extra days in Dubrovnik, how difficult it is to get to the airport from the city? I've read most of the Croatia/Dubrovnik posts and don't think I've seen that information. Is there a shuttle-type bus, or is it just taxis? mhm

Dubrovnik's airport is about 20 minutes or so from the city. You can either take a taxi or catch the Atlas bus that meets each flight. We took a taxi when we first arrived, as prearranged by our hotel, and took the Atlas bus when we arrived on a Croatian Airlines flight from Zagreb back to Dubrovnik. We were a little worried about relying on the bus, but it was there waiting for us when our flight arrived at 10:00 p.m., so I think they are pretty reliable.

Also forgot to mention that the bus drops you off right outside of Ploce gate, which is pretty convenient for the old city. The ride was very cheap, especially compared to taxi prices.

Tracy, what about the return trip to the airport. Is there also a bus at regular intervals to return to the airport?

I believe the Atlas bus picks up 90 minutes before each flight, but you have to catch the bus at the ferry terminals, which is a few miles from old town Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik's airport is very, very small so most busses don't make regular trips out there, which is why this one leaves 90 minutes before each flight.

Because you will probably have to find some mode of public transportation (bus or taxi) to get to the main bus station, it may be better to just take a cab. We share a cab, which the hotel arranged for us, with a couple that we met earlier in our trip to save on the cost. There is also a taxi stand right outside of Ploce Gate, in front of the sobe we stayed at for the first three nights of our trip. Its near the bus stop and there were always taxis waiting there.

We were in Dubrovnik last June and loved it! We flew into Dubrovnik and out of Split. We enjoyed our experience in Croatia so much that we are going to go back with our young adult kids next summer.

The bus leaving from the bus station 90 minutes before each flight was fiction in my case. The only bus that would get me to my Croatian flight to Zagreb left 110 minutes before my flight. The next bus wouldn't get me there in time. Fortunately I was at the station in plenty of time. Since the flight times even for the same flight number often leave at different times during the week, the schedule is a little hard to predict. The tourist information office in the old town near Pile Gate will know, but not until 9AM each day.

The bus itself is quite nice and once you're on it it's fine. I used it from the airport which was very convenient because it stops at Pile Gate near the Hilton. Again returning to the airport requires that you get to the bus station. I took the local bus and it was quite a hassle: hot, crowded and hard to know when to get off. The airport bus does make other stops after leaving the station, including a stop above the old town. But I understand if the bus is full, it won't stop. Had I know my bus would have been only partially full , I would have tried that. It's all a bit of a hassle going to the airport, but it's certainly cost effective. I'd probably take a taxi to the station next time.

Jeff, your experiences were exactly why we chose to take a taxi back to the airport. I wasn't sure if we could trust the pick-up times, and we had to get to Dubrovnik's airport to get back to London. If we missed the flight, there wasn't another flight to London for several days and thus we would have missed our flight home....not a situation we wanted to find ourselves in! We usually go the cheaper route and take the busses, and it worked fine for the ride into the city, but to get back to the airport I think a taxi is probably the best bet.

We were in Dubrovnik Sept/Oct and we had the people who we rented our apartment from pick us up from the airport and then take us back to the airport. They charged 25 euro, I think and I wouldn't have changed it for anything. We lost one piece of luggage when we arrived in Dubrovnik. We had no problems because the person picking us up helped us through the entire process, since they spoke croatian. It was great.

Some options how to get from Dubrovnik airport to Dubrovnik (and vice versa) can be found at http://dubrovniktaxi.proboards24.com...ead=1115390663, usually if you pre-booked a taxi you can get a cheaper rate then regular.

Many times private accommodation owners offers a "taxi service" for their guests and charge them,sometimes more then regular taxi is. What they offer is illegal because they are not reqistred and insured for doing transfers.

You are expected to pay for an airport transfer from Dubrovnik to Dubrovnik airport 200 - 220 Croatian Kuna (not more. These prices are determinated by taxi meter in an register taxi vehicle.

My Dubrovnik landolord recommended going to either of the two main gates a day ahead of time and making arrangements with a taxi to pick us up the next morning. It was the wee hours of the morning long before sunrise, and her suggestion worked perfectly.
