Dubrovnik
we arrive on a cruise for a day and was wondering if it would be easy enough to get off the ship and find transportation around Dubrovnik for the day? Any suggestions would be helpful

Most people probably stick to walking around the old city of Dubrovnik, which is pretty small - easy to walk except many, many stairs in parts. There are few cars allowed inside. Give yourself about an hour just to walk the city walls, one of the most common tourist activities.
Outside...what is it you'd want to see? You can take a local bus over to Lapad from near the Pile Gate if you want - Lapad is kind of a trendy beach suburb/resort area of Dubrovnik, without the "old world charm" but some people enjoy the beaches there.

The Old Town (Stari Grad) is definitely walking territory.
Dress for very warm weather. Prepare for crowds in cruise ship season.
If you can manage the walk around the walls, it is fascinating.
I would also recommend a tiny museum about Dubrovnik in the war that is worth seeing. The reason that all the roof tiles look so new is that the Montenegrans commanded the hills around the city and rained artillery into the center. A whole different side of life and not long ago.

If the ship has a tender to take you into the harbor, you're there. The harbor is right outside the walls, and everything you will want to see (most likely) and have time to see is within the walls.
While Dubrovnik looks large on a map, it really is not. I was there for a day last fall on a cruise too. A tour was included, but I decided to roam about on my own. One of the first things I did was walk the walls. I made the whole circuit, which offered amazing views. However, even in early September, and early in the morning, it was very hot. There is virtually no shade, so water and an umbrella come in handy. There are, however, several places along the wall to stop and buy a beverage.
I saw all the sights and even visited both the Dominican and Franciscan Monasteries, both of which had lovely cloisters. I walked around back streets, which was helpful in addition to interesting since the main street, the Stradun, was wall to wall people. I did not go inside the Rector's Palace or Sponza Palace, but I did find time to have a cold local beer at the Buza Bar to rest after my wall walk.
One other note: The Stradun and most of the other streets are paved with marble. Even in rubber-soled shoes it could be slippery, so make sure you have on good walking shoes.

My advice to you is to look for out of the way places to get away from the incredible crush of the cruise ship crowds--of which you will be one. The town inside the walls is small and when 2, 3 or more cruise ships disgorge all their passengers, it can be hard to move. Make the most of it (the place is a true gem, but just gets obscured with all the bodies) and look for places to escape the hordes.
