Dublin Hotel Recommendations in November
Has anyone recently stayed at the Georgian Hotel on Baggot Street and can tell me of their experience both pro and con? I have booked accomodations for 5 nights in November but I am still looking around. I am considering Fitzwilliam, Westbury and Shelbourne but I don't know if I want to spend the extra money. Fitzwilliam prices are not bad but it does have sleek modern look and I have heard the Shelbourne is not what it used to be considering what they charge for a standard. I think my mom would prefer something with more country charm. The Georgian hotel rate is very good ($99 euros twin room inclu VAT & svce charges. But I am open to other suggestions from people that have stayed at other properties be it guesthouses or hotels. Thank you in advance for your help.
The Towers Hotel on Lansdowne Road in Dublin 4 is nice too. I worked there a couple of years ago. Contential breakfast and complimentary bar in the evening, not sure of prices for rooms. It's part of the Jurys Hotel chain so you should be able to find it through their website. The American embassy is about a block away and they often have short term staff live at the hotel, so you might have some interesting convestations with otehr guests.

I don't think this hotel is up to much - I think I remember seeing complaints about it here on this forum. The location is good, but it is over a pub and is noisy. I remember people saying that it's a bit grotty too. If you are looking for something special that's not too expensive, try Number 31 - a really lovely guesthouse in a Georgian House - www.number31.ie. You might also consider Simmonstown House in Ballsbridge, another charming guesthouse, about a mile outside the city centre, but it is well serviced by public transport - www.simmonstownhouse.com. If you wish to stay in the city centre, I'd recommend the Fitzwilliam. The Westbury has lovely public areas but I don't think the rooms are anything special. Hope this helps.

Kath,

I am on baggott street a lo6t but unsure which one this hotel is. I am hersitant about if ifthere is a pub below the hotel. Try number 31 as mentioned above as I hear they are nice from others who have stayed there. Also the Fitzwilliam is lovely but pricey and the Shelbourne has really gotten run down these days and I feel not worth the money. Someone last month mentioned Brooks hotel on Drury street. It's just off Grafton street( shopping and restaurants) and I think it would be better value than the fitzwilliam and on a quiet street. Check them out. If you go as far as Ballsbridge you will have to get a bus or Dart(train) to the centre but some people don't mind as the surrounding neighborhoods are lovely.

Terry has The Towers mixed up with another hotel, The Towers is a four star hotel, that is certainly not over a pub. Oasis members stayed there when I was working there, and I served coffee to Irish cabinet ministers who were using one of the conference rooms there. While it may not be The best Hotel in Dublin, it is certainly not 'grotty'

Good B&B type is the Glenveagh House on Northumblerland street just over the canal. Nice rooms, good breakfast, about 15 minute walk from Trinity College. In Ballsbridge area. Italian Embassy is just down the street, US not much farther. Good access to DART at a couple of different stations. City bus stop right in front. Excellent place to stay to avoid the big impersonal hotels.

I also liked the Mespil Hotel on Mespil Street at Baggot, just across the canal. Nice rooms. More of a big hotel though. Given the choice I would choose Glenveigh House liked it better.

Both have web sites by the way if you search for them.

We just returned from Dublin and stayed at the MONT CLARE on Merrion Square. It was a great location- walking distance to Trinity College, Grafton St and Temple Bar. We paid 115 euros thru a discount hotel website. It is a fairly small but lovely hotel.

From someone living in Dublin out of the choices listed I would reccommend the Montclaire. There are 2 hotels on either corner opposite the MontClare related to this hotel called the ALexander and the Davenport. All three are good hotels and in excellent condition and just beside Merrion Square. All 3 are 5-10 mins walk to the shopping area (Grafton Street) and restaurants/Pubs.

I used to book the Alexander and Davenport for people visiting my work on Business as well our X mas party 2 years ago was at the Davenport. I've also been to Functions in the MontClare.

The others hotels people are stating are further out and you will be taking the bus or dart too much for the same price range. Everyone has a personal preference but logidtically these are closer to town and in good areas

Good luck & enjoy
