We have never been to Ireland, not big city people. Meeting an old friend in Dublin for the day before we fly home the next morning. She's taking a train to Connolly Station , Amiens St. Dublin 1. Neither of us know anything about Dublin. I need a B & B or hotel relatively close to the station (I can research this online), but need to know if it's a SAFE area. Also, once we meet, where to for the day? She goes back on the train that evening. (We have 10 hours to kill !)

Kill? Dublin is a great city with tons of things to see and do .

I wold see:

Book of Kells at Trinity
Dublin castle
Several museums
Numerous historic sights associated with the rising

Can say how near to train station - but Dublin isn;t a large city - at least the historic sights

Sorry, that came out wrong! I should have said I would be with my friends for 10 hours. I know we can barely touch what Dublin has to see !

But I was wondering if the area near the train station is a safe area. Looking at the map now, I realize Dublin is compact, so we may not have to stay as close as we thought.

Three of things that I most enjoyed from our two trips to Dublin have been: 1) Historical Walking Tour of Dublin, 2) Kilmainham Gaol and 3) National Museum of Archaeology. You could easily do all these (and more) in a 10-hour visit.

Dublin is not Chicago. It is relatively small and safe. Just be careful of pickpockets as you would in any European city.

Best places of interest to me in Dublin are the post office and the Guinness Storehouse. Best seafood chowda I ever had anywhere was at the Ryan's FXB Grills.

I stay on the other side of the Liffey, usually around the college but the hotels on the other side are not bad. I don't stay in the Temple Bar area anymore. The kegs rolling down the street are a 6 am wake up call. I think Dublin is a very safe City. The seafood chowder in Ireland is so good. I have heard some say the Best Western is ok in that area.

There's no right or wrong answer to your question. It all depends on your interests. Since your time is limited, I wouldn't do much that required you to stand in line for a while. I enjoyed Trinity College/Book of Kells, but I was able to walk right into the exhibit. If you have to wait in line for a while, I would skip it. The Gaol was extremely interesting. Walking down Grafton Street and enjoying the street performers is a nice way to enjoy Dublin while spending time with your friend. The Guinness Warehouse, and enjoying a Guinness on the 7th floor in the Gravity Bar is also enjoyable. If you want a flavor of the city, you can get on a hop on/hop off bus, get an overview, and decide where you want to get off for a visit. There are tons of places to eat and drink, so grabbing a nice lunch could be part of your experience. St. Patrick's Cathedral might be enjoyable to you. St. Patrick's, Guinness, and the Gaol, are all best accessed by hop on/hop off bus. If you do Guinness, Gaol, St. Patrick's, lunch, Grafton Street, and possibly Trinity/Book of Kells, you'll have a wonderful day. Undoubtedly, you'll see several places you'll want to check out while you're going around the city, as well.
