Dropping off a rental car in Chiusi question

Do you know if a rental car can be dropped off on a day that the rental company is closed?

We originally planned to take the train from Rome to Chiusi and rent a car for the few days we'll be staying in Montepulciano, then return the car in Chiusi and train to Florence.

Well we are leaving Rome on a Sunday and the Chiusi car rental agencies are closed, so now we are renting a car in Rome. I have just out that the day we would return the car in Chiusi is Republic Day and the rental company isn't open.

If need be we will return the car the night before and take a bus back to the apartment in Montepulciano, then returning to Chiusi the next day (bus or taxi) to take the train to Florence. We aren't keen on driving into Florence. I rented an apartment close to the train station that we can walk to.

I'm just wondering if they might have a key drop off and we can just leave the car? Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

What car company? Did you go through Kemwel or Auto Europe? If so, they could answer your question.

I recommend returning the car to the Florence airport and then taking the airport bus into Florence. The bus drops you off right next to the Florence train station and I think the cost is 6E. It is a pretty straight forward drive to the airport from Montepulciano (SR2 to the A1) and there is even a gas station on the road from the A1 to the airport rental office where you can fill up. I've done it many times and found it quite easy. Plan on 1.5-2 hours for the drive.

It was Budget (online through AutoEurope - I guess I can give them a call). Otherwise, I guess we are driving to Florence. I really wanted to take more trains vs. driving but it sounds fairly easy to get to Florence.

Thank you zoecat and bobthenavigator!

Thank you, Henry! I just did a search and they get very good reviews (although I can't find anything very recent). I will check them out.

Typically, the rental offices close for a few hours between 12 and 4. If you are picking up a car on Sunday and only keeping for a few days then it shouldn't be closed. I suspect it has more to do with the time of day you are choosing.

kybourbon - I believe my problem is that I'm trying to get a car in Chiusi on a Sunday. I'm leaving Chiusi on Thursday, June 2nd, and it's a holiday in Italy so they are closed that day too.

I have picked up a car in Chiusi twice on a Sunday. I had booked both cars through AutoEurope, which arranged for someone to come each time and open the office for me and fill out the paperwork. Worked like a charm both times. I think it cost about 25 euros extra.

Call AutoEurope directly to clarify. They are located in Maine.
Hopefully you'll find the same solution as StCirq above did.

Thanks, everyone! I will call AutoEurope and if I can't work it out I will try Henry's suggestion.

I just wanted to come back and say that Heny's suggestion works out for us. We are booking with Aesse Rental. They are closed on Sundays and holidays but will meet us on those days to pick up and drop off a car. This way we can tool around the countryside but take the train to and out of Tuscany, which was our preference.

I did check with AutoEurope but they could only hook us up with a rental car pickup in Rome and drop off in Florence.

I will report back on Aesse Rental after our trip. Thanks, again, everyone.

Good luck! I'm sure will have a great time!

(I have a not so fond memory of dropping off a rental car in Chiusi. The problem was more related to not having my bank card work in any machines and I needed cash for my next stop! The poor locals are still probably wondering about the crazy woman running around town, stopping in at various banks in a panic.)

PS. You'll love Montepulciano.

If your party (or any of them) are steak-lovers, look up Osteria Acquacheta in Montepulcino. Reservations an absolute must (we saw many people turned away at the door), the owner/proprietor speaks excellent English (so don't be afraid to call for reservations). You will not be sorry!

Thanks to Bob the Navigator's referral to Giacomo's (of Politian Apartments) recommendation for this suggestion.
