Driving to Pompeii
We are taking a side trip from Rome to Pompeii. We will pick up the car (we are getting it for a week to drive Tuscany) that morning and then heading south. I can follow the map to Naples and even to Pompeii...but then none are detailed enough to get me off the road to the ruins. And the Travel guides just show you the ruins. ahhhh!!! Any advice or directions? Is there a large parking lot in front of the entrance?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Already did. They were very helpful in general-but same situation...they drop me into "Pompeii" but not necessarily the ruins.
Unless there is no city of Pompeii to speak of and it is ALL the ruins. That would answer my question then.

Just to follow up on the previous message, you will see brown signs that say "scavi," "Pompeii/scavi" or something similar. Follow those signs and you will be OK. Also, there is no official parking lot maintained by the site, but there are several large commercial lots right near the entrance to the ruins - the cost is usually around 8 Euro to park all day, although some places will give you a discount if you eat at certain restaurants, etc.

I always recommend the Touring Club Italiano (TCI) maps, extremely detailed however if just to Pompeii and back not sure its worth the purchase. There is an exit at the ruins, when you come off if you head straight pretty much there's a great place to park and if you eat there (and the food is not bad) the parking is free. It is located very close the the main entrance of the ruins. Sorry wish I had better directions to give, it was one of those places we just happened into.

You can't miss it as long as you follow the "Scavi" signs, it is a matter of yards from the highway exit. You'll pass through booths selling stuff (mostly lava ash figurines) and the road will go right into a dirt parking lot. Be ready to walk, though. Pompeii is BIG!
By the way, if you drive up Mt. Vesuvius, there is a little store about halfway up (right on the cliff) and the owner is a fascinating, charming man who was four years old during the last eruption (I think 1944( and his stories are wonderful!

SLC, make sure to get an early start on the day. The ruins are fascinating--you might find yourself spending a good chunk of the day wandering around! If you can possibly do it, eat before entering the ruins, or bring a little picnic lunch with you. The cafeteria on the grounds is pretty dreadful.
