My wife and I are traveling through Iceland this summer and wanted some feedback on our itinerary. Specifically, we are driving and wanted to know how much time it will take to drive from location to location and whether or not it is doable in a non 4wd vehicle. Also, any hotel suggestions outside of Reykjavik would be helpful.
Day 1 - Arrive in Reykjavik, Tour City
Day 2 - Tour Pingvelur National Park, Geyser, Gulfoss
Day 3 - Drive north to Stykkisholmur... stop by Deildartunguhver, Hravnfossar and Hvalfjordur on the way (Need hotel suggestion for Stykkisholmur)
Day 4 - Tour Snaefellsness Pennsisula/Whale Watching using Stykkisholmur as a base
Day 5 - Drive east to Akureyri (Need hotel suggestion)
Day 6 - Tour Lak Myvatin, Godafoss and Dettifoss ... (QUESTION - Should we go back to Akureyi or proceed to Husavik for the night???)
Day 7 - Tour Jokulsargljufer National Park, Asbyrgi Canyon. Stay in Husavik
Day 8 - Drive from Husavik to Reykjavik (we know this will be a long drive... but not quite sure how long)
We have a feeling that we might be overextending ourselves with respect to driving times, etc. So, if anyone could help us out so we don't end up driving for 90+% of our vacation, we would greatly appreciate it... Any other suggestions about the itinerary would also be helpful. Thanks!!!!!.

Jeff,
As nobody has responded to you I'll have a bash. My experience has only been in the eastern half of Iceland so I can't help much.
2WD is OK if you stick to the ordinary roads. However if you intend to use any F roads the regulations insist on 4WD.
Driving times are difficult as in summer you may get stuck behind slower moving traffic (although traffic is generally very light) and the scenery will make you want to stop a lot. Limits are about 60mph on sealed roads and 50mph on unsealed. You might expect to maintain 50mph fairly easily on sealed roads (less on hairy bits), however unsealed can vary from a smooth 50 to a bumpy 25! Those speed exclude times for stops - only you know how long you will want for those.
Your days 6/7 seem a little confusing. From Akureyri you could do a circuit of Godafoss, Myvatn, Dettifoss, Asbyrgi, Husavik. There is some accommodation not far from Asbyrgi. Going to Husavik/Akureyri for night 6 makes little sense to me.
Husavik to Reykjavik seems a very long drive.
Personally I would want to do a lot less than you plan, but people are different.
Michael
