We will be driving from Reykjavik to the West Fjords, touring around for a few days, and then trying to see the southern part of Iceland. While we'll be driving north mainly along the coast, should and can we drive south on a different route? We'd rather not precisely backtrack. Can this be done without a 4WD? Thank you for thoughts!!!!

UK Trip, Final Chapter

hi luna - where to start?
firstly transport. people here are divided, but if you are going to the Western Fjords, you will certainly find a 4WD more comfortable, as many of the roads are gravel rather than tarmac. BTW, in a hire car you are not allowed to use the F roads anyway, and doing so will invalidate your insurance, but B roads can be pretty taxing.
secondly, getting to and from the fjords and then the south of Iceland. to get to them, the obvious route is via the ring road [Route 1, which is a tarmac road that goes all round the island] to the snaefellness peninsular, and then on the Baldur ferry to the beginning of the fjords.
here's the link for the ferry:

to get back, you can either do the same thing, or drive all the way back, or drive round the north to get to the south.
where in the south do you want to get to? ironically, it may be almost as easy to go round the top as to drive back south again, as once you are on Route 1, you can drive for hours, especially in the summer when daylight lasts 24 hours - monotony is the worst enemy!
there are things to see en route of course, and when you get fed up of driving, you can stop and do some sightseeing/book into a hotel for the night.
what time of year are you going?
Annhig,
Thank you so much - we are going the first of August. We are thinking of circling round the top of the West Fjords and down the east side and back through selfoss area. Does that make sense?

on the map, it makes perfect sense. but from memory what looks like a decent road from the Selfoss area to the Western Fjords [which we did that way round - the opposite direction to you] is an absolute pig. believe me, by the time you've driven along the road from the fjords back to the tarmac which starts just before you get to the Baldur ferry port, you will have had your fill of gravel roads. much better to get the ferry back [a wonderful trip, and I hate ferries], and then drive what looks a bit further round the ring road.
you'll be glad you did!
