Hi all,
I’ll be driving from the Rome airport to Siena, leaving in the early afternoon. I’ve looked at several maps and books, and it seems to me that you could take a route that is closer to the coast, or onw further inland, depending on which side of Rome you go around. Does anyone know if the driving times vary, and/or what the difference/appeal is of one route vs. the other?

Hi Alice. Not too long ago, there was a post from someone staying in Tuscany the night before the flight from Rome for the states. He wanted advice on alternate routes to FCO. There were very good answers in reply.
The people answering really seemed to know what they were talking about. I just cannot remember the title.
If you try to do a search, maybe you can bring it up. If not, this might help bringing it to the top.

I am the original poster that Sherry is talking about. To be honest I still haven't made up my mind about which route to take. Not going until first of June so I got a little time. First suggested route is Siena to Grosseto via the S223, Grosseto south along the S1 or the A12 into Fiumicino. This looks good but might be a little longer that the second suggestion which is:
Seina east via the S73/E78 to the S326 to the A1, and south to Roma and the GRA. GRA around Roma to Fiumicino. This is the Michelin pick as well as the Shellgeostar site. Mr concern still is that I will be hitting the GRA around 8AM if I leave Siena @ 5:00AM. Not sure I want to fight the traffic and God knows what else. Might just wait til I get to Siena and ask around for opinions.
i have driven both routes tho not at the times jim is considering. The costal route is wonderful for aazy day of stopping off. We did Cerveteri, Tarquinia and a food festival all in one day. if you need to be somewhere, take the a1
