Driving Itinerary in Austria Advice Please

Jump to last reply

We are on a Danube river cruise this October, with the final stop in Prague. At that point, we plan to pick up a rental car and drive south to Austria. There is so much to see but not enough time and I am having difficulty picking and choosing. (We will have had 4 days in Vienna at the start of the trip, and during the cruise will see the towns along the Danube.) We interested in seeing dramatic Alpine scenery, doing some hiking, see ice caves and salt mines as well. Here is our current plan:

Day 1 - Drive from Prague to Salzburg with a stop in Cesky Krumlov. Stay 2 nights in Salzburg
Day 2 - Salzburg
Day 3 - Drive toward Filzmoos and stay there 2 nights. Is there time to drive the Grossglockner Hwy today, particularly being October?
Day 4 - Filzmoos area
Day 5 - Drive to Vienna - stay near airport
Day 6 - Fly home in the morning.

Any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you for your advice.
