Driving in the Czech Republic

Would like to get information about driving in Czech, I will be renting a car for 4 days and not sure yet as to which places and areas are the best to visit,
could driving south to Austria be a good option ?
thanks for any tips.

If you plan to drive on motorways, you need a special windshield sticker, It's about $8. Worth it to avoid traffic delays.
Other advise depends on your likes/dislikes re: castles/chateaus; cathedrals; historic sites & museums; scenery; spas; urban vs rural.

Austria is beautiful. No question about it. But with so little time and so much to see and do in the Czech Republic, why not spend your time enjoying that country? the driving is easy. The roads are good and you can really maximize the enjoyment your four days can bring you.
Not sure where you land, but, obviously, spend some time in Prague, at least two days. There are a lot of options after that, but you don't give us enough information to really be able to help you. If the four days you refer to is time available after seeing Prague, you can do more. You don't need a car in Prague. Give us more information and we will do the same.

I agree, skip Austria and stay in CZ. Cesky Krumlov in the south and towns inbetween ar worth a stay. Terezin (sp) as well as the castles around Prague are also good never mind Karlsbad or the spa cities.

Driving in Prague was not our favorite so we simply parked it for 3 days and walked everywhere.

Once my husband got over the idea of trying to go places fast and just relaxed in the slower traffic and watched the wonderful scenery, driving in CZ became not only ok but positively wonderful. We enjoyed the countryside as much, if not more, than Prague. Went to Czesky Krumlov and did day trips from there. Also went to Mariendbad and Karlovy Vary. Wonderful time. Driving was fine.

In driving just be careful of the speed of the other drivers - very fast. The side mirror will show a different distance from the rear view mirror. I was driving on a highway and looked at the side mirror to see if it was OK to pull into the left lane to pass. Saw a car but it seemed very far away, and I didn't calculate its speed. Almost had a horrible accident PLUS the driver had a fit of road rage !! Look both in the side and, more importantly, the rear view mirrors. The rear view will give you an accurate view of distance.

Hi we visited the Czech Republic several years and drove around the country. We visited Telc and really nice small city in southern Moravia. The city center was stunning with the building. visited Cesky Krumlov really spectacular, Kutna Hora and Ceske Budevjovice. You can visit the brewery but only certain days and times, and we missed it. we had been in Prague before and visited Terrizin then. Both are must see, for the beauty of Prague and the emotional impact of Terrizine. We took a Jewish tour from the old Jewish quarter with a survivor and that made the impact of Terrizin even stronger.
We had no problem driving. We rented a car in Vienna and drove there. The roads are good. The car came with the motorway sticker on it.

I have just started planning a week vacation in CR and am most intrigued by the countryside. I may post a separate question but this seemed to have stimulated just what I needed. Any recommendations on places to stay in these towns?

If you visit Moravia, there is a town named Buchlovice which is within day-trip distance of Mikulov, Lednice, Valtice, Uheriske Hradiste, and other towns of interest. Just outside Buchlovice is a marvelous pension called Buchlov Park, about 100 meters down the hill from the castle. The pension features excellent cuisine, swimming pool, horseback riding, and other amenities.

Visite certainly town Mikulov. You will be smitten with the historical town and wine and viticulture capital of Czech. There is a lot of sigts. The historical Jewish Quarter, synagogue and the large Jewish Cemetery. The cemetery contains around four thousand gravestones. There is Unique Viticultural Exhibition in the baroque Chateau Mikulov. The display also includes the historical wine-presses and a remarkable vat from 1643 in the Chateau cellar. When I tell you that a craftsman and his three assistants worked on it for 38 weeks to finish it, you will not be surprised by its.noteworthy capacity - 101,600 litres.
Very seductive chance is to explore viticulture and wine in small wine-cellars of mikulover wine-growers, taste local wines. There are the wine cellars located in the limestone caves. You have my invitation to taste of my wines in my limestone cellar.
Near from Mikulov is Lednice-Valtice Area, the large-scale landscape park protected by UNESCO.
You can finde more information and photos from Mikulov and its surrounding on web-site www.mikulov.cz or e-mail [email protected]
