Driving in Spain: Special Rule!
According to a NYTimes article (6/25/05 Business section) Spanish law requires that if you wear glasses you must carry an extra pair with you in the car in case the first pair gets broken!
It also mentions that:
In Switzerland if you are behind two or more cars at a traffic light you MUST turn off your engine!
Sounding a horn in Finland is illegal except in case of immediate danger!
The middle lane on Italian autostradas is the fast lane!
Many rentals won't allow you to drive an expensive car like BMW or Mercedes into Italy because of theft problems.
No one over 75 can rent cars in Ireland.
child seats cost about $8-9/day if you don't bring your own

As you're Spanish i believe have you ever heard of this law being enforced - do police at check points, if they have them like they do in many European countries - look for an extra pair of glasses?

... only if they are really trying to collect money
It happened to my brother years ago, and he managed not to get the fine.
The thing you should be really careful with is the safety belt. The police is being really hard on it, specially with the people sitting in the back seat and not wearing them. The fine goes to the infractor, not the driver, so remember to wear it always. And, yes, it is being enforced.

another important rule for americans to take note.(In spain, and i think most of europe)
you CANNOT cross a solid line.
Not only not PASS, but CROSS.
No turning left across a solid line on road even if there is no traffic. you can only cross a line that is DOTTED on your side.
otherwise.. go find a place to turn around ... BIG FINES and immense possibility of getting rammed from behind by unsuspecting typical tailgaiting car.
this is especially important when entering and leaving gas stations as these are the places you are most tempted just to turn into without paying attention.
and... NO TURN ON RED!!!

I don't know about Spain but in Italy it is against the law to talk on a cell phone while driving unless you use a handfree cell phone (ie headset). Is this also true in Spain??
If so that would be important to know.
