Driving in Rome?

We have been invited to a wedding in sorrento - we are contemplating driving from rome to sorrento (about 3 hrs) but a lot of people tell me it is an absolute nightmare to drive in rome...I've done my sums and seeing as I can hire a car for 3 days for £60 it seems to be the cheapest option...any advice or suggestions PLEASE!

I say go for it. You're not "driving in" Rome. You'll be "driving out of" Rome and "driving back into" Rome only.

Pick up the car at the airport and drive directly there and back. You do not, repeat do not want to drive in Rome. However, if you do, be sure to carry max insurance.

Good luck, Frank

If you are not going to stay in Rome, but simply flying into Rome and driving directly to Sorrento then Frank's suggestion to pick up a car at the airport is right. If however, you plan on seeing Rome then this thread was a great help to me: (As you will see, I too am picking up a car in downtown Rome and driving to Sorrento)

Driving in Rome is difficult but not impossible. We've picked up rentals at Termini and managed to drive out of the city fairly easily. Airport pickup will cost more, if that's important to you. I'm sure you could manage as we did. But, as the others have said, if you're flying into Rome, it would seem the easiest course would be to get the car there.
