We are a party of ten people who intend to rent three cars. Our vlla is in Lindos. But a few people have concerns about driving and someone suggested they could take a cab and get anywhere they want. For me, it's no different than driving in Boston, as there are crazy drivers everywhere. Is there any justification for not renting a car and using a 'cab'?? Airport to Lindos, or Lindos to Rhodes city. Lindos to other sights. Thanks Richard

I can't say specifically for Rhodes but it's unlikely to be different from the mainland...

In Greece you are expected to put 2 wheels
onto the shoulder of the road to let a faster car pass. You will also encounter cars passing on hills and on curves. Always keep right when cresting a hill or rounding a bend lest you meet someone coming toward you in your lane.

And don't be shocked if someone pulls out to pass even though you are heading straight for him.... move right, the guy he's passing will move right and 3 cars can squeeze by.

That said... I wouldn't hesitate for a second to drive in Greece... I've done it twice and love it! ;^)

Thanks PA; Appreciate your response. We have driven in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Wales, Ireland and Luxembourg. BUT I agree with everything you say. I know what you say about the cornors of roads. Actually what I was hoping for was someone to say, 'no problem'. These kids want to take a cab everywhere. Rhodes is a good size island and I suppose a cab to go everwhere. However, I guess the question I asked was not well thought out. These kids have driven in Italy. I have arranged this trip, but I will now 'go with the flow' and they can do what they feel comfortable doing. Thanks again. Richard

Iris: I spent a week in Rhodes in 2007, and rented a car for 3 days. Piece of cake, if you follow Paris' advice.
Rhodes is a beautiful island, and the roads are very good. Many places to drive to and enjoy.

Thanks Marinos; Wife and I will have a car. We will let the balance of the family decide how to get to the villa and visit the island of Rhodes. I do agree with you. Richard

When are you coming to Rhodes?
As someone who lives in Greece I can tell you that the time of year really does make a difference. We avoid travelling around too much mid July-end of Aug, the roads are very busy almost anywhere then.
On Rhodes we found the southwest of the island almost empty of traffic (out of high season), but The nearer you get to Rhodes town the busier it is, manic at peak times. The inland roads & villages are reasonable traffic wise, but DO have a good map, as up to date as possible, many roads that were poor are being surfaced & reclassified & some show on the maps as being ok, but are little more than dirt tracks. I used 2 different maps in conjunction to try & work out the most suitable & transversable routes.
Having said all that Rhodes was far more relaxed driving than on the mainland where we live, apart from Rhodes town itself.
I've just noticed you say you've driven in the UK, in which case Rhodes will be a piece of cake!

Hi yiassas; We will be on Rhodes Island on the 25th of June and departing on the 2nd of July. Our villa owner is having someone meet us at the airport and leading us to the villa just outside of Lindos. Thanks for all these tips. Richard

We took the local bus in Rhodes and found it to be cheap, easy and reliable.
Lindos is a wonderful village and picturesque beach. Enjoy it!
