driving from Zurich to Fussen
I am trying to "judge" approximately how long and the best route to take from Zurich to Fussen. Also, return from Fussen to Appenzel. We plan on staying in Germany 2 days. Any help on best scenic route, approx. distance from Zurich to Fussen, etc. will be greatly appreciated....
Thanks, Debbie

Fastest and most reasonable route is The A1 past Winterthur and St. Gallen to Rorschach to the end of the Bodensee (Lake Constance) at Bregenz, loop almost to Lindau, then east on the B12 and B12n over Walterhofen and down to Fuessen on the B309. It's about 140 miles and the more or less minimum driving time without stops would be something over two and one half hours.

Nothing spectacularly scenic along the way, but it should be an attractive trip passing through or just missing Appenzell and then around the Algaeur Alps.

There aren't really a lot of practical alternatives with the terrain in between the origin and destination.

Rome.Switzerland.Bavaria
www.twenj.com
Debbie,
Follow Ed's directions to Lindau, but instead of Rte B12, look for Rte 308 (the Deutsche Alpenstrasse, a highly scenic route. Take it east to Weissenbach, then Rte 198 north to Reutte and Rte 314 into Fussen. It's about 150 miles and three hours driving time. For a scenic return to Appenzel, take 314 back to Rte 198 and continue on 198 on the banks of the Lech River to Warth, then south to S16 (E60), west on E60 to Feldkirch, north to Altstatten, then west to Appenzel.
