Driving from Tuscany to Venice

Is there any thing particularly confusing about this drive once I'm on the highway? We will have a navigation device. I would appreciate any tips that any one has to offer. Thank you.

We drove from Castelina in Chianti to Venice last October with no problems. We had a trip guide from ViaMichelin and, of course, a map. Got a little confused when we got off the freeway in Mestre, but found the place to turn the car in with no real problems. Enjoy the drive!

Hi Tammy, not confusing but I would suggest you arrive before the heavy commute traffic which includes a lot of big trucks that will be turning to go north (A27) about where Mestre is. I have been "stuck" in this bumper to bumper traffic from Padova to Mestre and although again not confusing it is not relaxing. And that has been when natives of the Region of Veneto were driving. If I were you I would try to arrive at Venice around 3:00 to 3:30pm.
Best regards and enjoy your time in beautiful Italy!

Thank you roamer and LoveItaly.

LoveItaly, We are planning to leave Tuscany just after the morning rush which would put us in Mestre around 1:00. I hope that timing will be OK.

This won't be a direct response to your question but I thought I'd suggest avoiding the autostrada (highway). Not because it's the road of "maniacal Italian drivers" - it's not - but because I think you miss the best part of the drive. On a secondary road you drive through, or have the opportunity to stop for a short visit in, charming villages. How else would we have found Montagnana, our first walled city, or Mantova, or Montereggioni. They weren't in our guide books. But you come around a corner and it's Wow!

Also, we left Venice with a rental car on a weekday morning in August at about 10:00 am. If there was supposed to be rush hour traffic, we didn't know about that either. There wasn't any then.

Hi Tammy, even if you get to Padova by 1:00pm you will not hit the heavy commute traffic when you drive to Mestre. I have no idea where in Tuscany you are leaving from but Toni's comment about using secondary roads does give one some beautiful scenery and a chance to see some smaller places but I would only do that if you could get to Mestre by say 4:00pm at the latest. Best regards.
