Driving from Spain to Portugal - passport check?

So I'm driving from Sevilla to Lagos with a friend, but I stupidly forgot my passport. My friend is the one who actually rented the car, and she has her passport and IDP. The only ID I have with me is my drivers license from the United Stayes. Is there any possibility I won't be able to cross the border without my passport?

No border or passport control, but you will be asked for your passport in hotels.

If you are stopped by the police then you will need your passport. Police controls can happen anywhere not just at the border.

How did you even manage to leave the US without a passport never mind enter Europe, unless of course you are staying somewhere in Europe for a longer period of time.
The police may or may not accept you drivers licence as valid ID, but the chances of them wanting to see it are small. Your hotel however may want it.

When do you plan to cross the border? It has been announced that border control will be in effect May 10-14 due to the Pope's visit to Fatima.

I assume that the OP was already in Europe (perhaps studying in Seville) when she/he and a friend decided on a road trip. So, I'm assuming the passport is in Seville, not in the US.
