Driving from Rome (or Venice) down Amalfi Coast - HELP!!
Planning Italy vacation with 11 year old end of June 2001. Actually, I have 2 kids, my husband and my 11 year old. Both have attention span of 5 year olds. Don't want to do the museum thing too much, but don't want to miss the MUST Sees. Want to drive from either Venice or Rome (is it do-able in 6 days??) Any advice would be appreciated, as well as hotel advice.

We've been weighing car versus train/bus for the trip, ourselves. First, from Rome (Venice is at the other end of the country...you can do it but if you're just planning now, make it a plan to head for Amalfi from Rome.) The drive from Rome to Naples looks to be about 3 hours. I'd estimate another hour to reach Sorrento which would be a good place to stop for the night. Then I'd either leave the car and travel by bus to somewhere mid-coast for a night or two and do daytrips using that ever-present bus/ferry system. Of course, if you just want to "do the drive" you could start out from Sorrento in the AM and drive it, then head off to your next destination.
