I will be driving from the Rome Airport to Montepulciano. Appears from maps there are tolls along the way, A1 is the primary route. Interested in information on whether these tools are staffed toll booths that will provide change or do I need to plan for exact change / credit card (with security chip?). Thanks for your help and advice.

It is a year old so take that into account.

One of the recommendations is to Google image "A1 Italy toll booths" and check out the images. They have lanes dedicated to credit cards "Carte", transponders "Telepass" and cash. Note the comment about only taking European credit cards.

i cannot recall ever encountering an unmanned toll booth in Italy that required exact change. You can insert bills in the machines to get change.

Whenever we have done this (almost every august), there has been a person in the booth.

We drive that route frequently as we own a place near Montepulciano. The toll costs about 10-12 euros for that distance so if you have 20 on hand you will be fine. Last time I was there, there were manned booths at both Chiusi and Bettole.

There are a few completely automated exits, where the toll booths are not manned - one was at Firenze nord, but traffic has been recently rerouted to the A11 toll booths that are alway manned. I believe that also Melegnano, near Milan, is automated. I do not remember any other - all other exits have at least one manned lane.

We were in Italy last month and drove thru many toll booths (though not your exact route). We always use the credit card booths. Look for blue sign "Carte" and blue lane markers.

We used an old fashion credit card, without the chip and it worked fine. Normal credit card transaction fee, if any, applies. It's just like a regular credit card purchase.

We started using the credit card booths because there was almost no wait. Several times, the manned booths are 20+ cars deep while the credit card lanes are empty.
