Driving from Prague to Venice
My family of five wants to drive from Prague to Venice. I can see the route on the map, and here in California, we can do an eight hour drive in one day. Is it possible to do that in this case?
We already have a car rented and the price, including the drop off fees, is just fine with us. Are there additional costs associated with driving in Czech Republic and Austria that we should know about?
Will we have trouble with border crossings?
Anything else we should know?
Thanks in Advance!!

https://picasaweb.google.com/stuartt...cenesOfPrague# (scenes of Prague, on to Tec..easy drive to Vienna from there)
Be sure to drive to Telc(Teltsch) (stop for lunch)..I've done the drive Prague to Vienna in less than 8 hours..no traffic, that's one good thing. No mountainous roads like we have in SoCal...scenic countryside, friendly folks, plenty of petrol stations, etc.

The opening poster wants to drive from Prague to VENICE, not VIENNA. It's going to be at least 8 hrs, probably more, not counting lunch/dinner/petrol and any traffic or bad weather. If you do attempt it, consider looking into some contingency locations (Salzburg?) in the event that it doesn't work out.

The reference to Austria made my mind think Vienna rather than Venice.
You want to do this in 1 day? I think that would be quite stressful. You won't have time to stop and see anything, let alone stop for health and food breaks. You reference 8 hours driving in California but this trip is longer than 8 hours. Mappy shows 9 hours which really means about 12 hours and if there is road work, traffic jams, anything to slow you down it will take longer. 200km of the trip are not on highways and this will slow you down.
Maybe you could say why you want to do this drive rather than fly. The train takes 13 hours so that's a bit long as well.

The car will have everything you need for the Czech Republic but you need to find out what Austria and Italy require for disabled cars such as reflective vests and triangles to put behind the car to warn other motorists and ensure your rental car has what you need.

I think you should either break the day into 2, or consider flying. Air One flies direct Prague to Venice.
If you drive overnight in Salzburg is the obvious choice being almost exactly 1/2 way.
There are so many great places in the Czech Republic to stop from Prague to the border it seems a waste to just drive past them. I'm not very familiar with Austria, but even if you spent all day on day 1 doing Czechia, and then just drive on the second morning arriving in Venice early afternoon I think you'll enjoy the whole experience a lot more - and get a lot more out of it.
