It would depend on how much time I had, but I'd probably take a little dip south and go to Chartres on the way, then through Alençon to see the lacemakers, and Argentan and Avranches, and then when I was ready for the Normandy leg go north to St-Malo and Caen/Bayeux.

Dear Underhill,
We only want to get to le Mont Saint Michel in time to enjoy it. That's where we're spending the night. Leaving Paris in the morning will put us on the road around nine, I think. I don't see any big freeway going straight down there.

Nope--no direct autoroute for the most part. But have you tried viamichelin.com and mappy.com for various routes? You can plug in various factors and then get an itinerary with approximate driving times.
