Driving from Ljubljana (Slovenia) to Prague (Czech Republic)

Does anyone have any tips, advice or info on the best way to drive frome Lju to Prague? What stops are there on the way that are worth checking out?

You have three options basically.

Number 1: via Salzburg, Linz and Ceske Budejovice
Number 2: via Maribor, Graz, Linz and Ceske Budejovice
Number 3: via Maribor, Graz, Vienna and Brno

The first and second options are around 660 km, but feature paying tunnel tolls through the Alps in addition to the Slovenian, Austrian and Czech vignettes, the third option is around 700 km but does not have any additional tolls along the way besides the vignettes.

On the way there are many many worthwhile stops in Slovenia, Austria and Czech Republic. It all depends on the time you have and what you have already seen in these countries.

Jay,

We are planning a similar drive next year, in reverse direction though. Our itinerary (not set in stone yet) will probably be Prague – Cesky Krumlov – Hallstatt (Austria) – Lake Bled (Slovenia) – Ljubljana.

Just to give you another idea…happy travels.

Are you using your car or a rental? Rental agencies have severe restrictions regarding drop-offs and some prohibit taking their cars to Prague from out of the CR. Drop charges can be prohibitive (hundreds of dollars).

Review those issues first, if you're renting. If not, be careful anyway with your car in Prague.
