I'm planning above trip as a surprise for my husband and wonder if anyone can tell me how long it takes and the best route to take. we're doing this in May next year and plan to drive a vw golf. My husband loves driving and we both love scenery. Were happy to have some overnight stops on route Any suggestions or advice would be great

Umm... you probably want this one tagged as Italy and Switzerland, not UK.
Where in Switzerland are you headed anyway? One part of the country vs the other may make a difference.
Just head west along the SP342 for 60 miles and you're in Como. Which is under a mile from the Swiss border. MIGHT take you 90 mins if you dawdle.
But you obviously know that, because if you can find this forum you can find Google maps.
So what question are you really asking?
Where in CH?
I would start in Lugano but hopefully not stop there. Luzern deserves 2 days after that.

We have 7 days for this trip....at a push 10..We'll start and finish in Bergamo. I'm wondering if we should head to Bern or Zurich? The main objective is to drive on scenic routes and spend evenings in nice places.Lugano and Luzern seem good choices...where else would you suggest for stops?

I suggest that you stop a night in Bergamo town,before you head for the hills....it's very beautiful and has lovely little botanic garden and an excellent natural history museum.
