Driving from Ambose to Oradour-Sur-Glane and ultimately Sarlat

We will drive from Amboise to Oradour-Sur-Glane the first day. It is approximately a 3 hour drive. We will have visited 2 or three chateaux at this point in the trip. Please advise on options.

Plan A: Drive through Villandry or Azay-le-Rideau for one more Chateau(This also adds about 40 minutes drive time.). This would make a late afternoon arrival in Oradour -Sur -Lane. The historic site is open until 7:00 p.m. We could go and visit, but that seems like a lot in one day.

We are staying in a lovely B&B. We can have dinner there if we choose. Do you have dinner recommendations for the area?

Queston: Would it be better to just to enjoy the drive, skip the one more chateau, and go on to Oradour-Sur-Lane?

Plan B: Take time to stop for the extra chateau time and arrive late. Visit Oradour - Sur -Gland the next morning. We had planned to go through Limoges and tour a couple of hours there. I have been reading forum comments and I'm not sure we want to spend time there??? Either way we will drive on to Sarlat that day, drive time from Oradour - Sur-Glane to Sarlat,
1 hour 45 minutes.

The choice is to arrive early in Sarlat or spend some time in Limoges and arrive late.

Queston: Take time for Limoges or drive on to Sarlat?

We want to see and experience as much as we can. But I understand that France is a place to stop and just relish being there and the area around you. Although, I'm not sure that this is the area to linger. I apologize for my lack of knowledge about travel in France, I count on those of you who have been blessed to visit, revisit, and become at home with this area.

Thank you.

I would go with Plan B and skip Limoges. I'd probably opt for dinner at the B&B, because that's always fun, though I've had a couple of good meals at Le Milord.

We drove from Sarlat to Amboise (we had visited Oradour-sur-Glane earlier in the trip). On the way to Amboise we hit Chateau Valençay (very beautiful..with a cool maze, too). It was 3 1/2 hours from Sarlat to Valençay. It was about another hour to Amboise, although our GPS was a little cranky that day.

This second link talks about visiting Oradour-sur-Glane and the drive from there. Both links contain photos, too. Sarlat was a two hour drive from Oradour-sur-Glane.

Thank you maitaitom! The links you included are great. I will read them thoroughly tonight and make notes!

St. Cirq, we will follow your advice on Limoges and continue on to Sarlat. It sounds like it could be an interesting drive.

I will review my notes, the new information and organize the trip details of Amboise to Sarlat!

I have been using via michelin for routes and mileage.

One step at a time.......

Thank you for taking time to help with details!

All I can say is, make sure you have plenty of time for Oradour sur Glane as there is so much to see and it would be wrong to rush it. I made a slide show http://youtu.be/Wg3UqtBDAM4 of the memorial village while there researching my book One Day In Oradour which was published last month http://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/search?...+oradour&Gid=1.
There are plenty of little cafes in the new Oradour town and parking at the visitor centre is easy. But it's well worth a visit. You won't forget it.

Villandry is one of our favorite chateaus. The gardens are memorable, if you are into that sort of thing. We enjoyed it so much that on our 2nd visit to The Loire we made a point of returning. Also there was an out building with original pottery & ceramics for sale. I don't know if that was temporary or not but we purchased some gorgeous small pieces for gifts.

I know Azay is a favorite for some but it didn't do much for us compared to the others.

So, IMO I would choose plan B, see Villandry, arrive later, and have dinner right at the B&B.
