Drive Vienna to Salzburg

Well, still tweeking our upcoming December trip to Germany and Austria: 3 weeks 28 Nov to 19 Dec.

We will be in Vienna 5 nights (overnight train from Berlin) with the next stop Salzburg (4 nights) before heading back to Munich for our flight out.

Our trip is really a city trip due to probable "winter" weather but we would really like to see some of the beautiful scenery in Austria and Germany. We are considering renting a car for Vienna/Salzburg in order to see the Melk Abbey and Hallstatt. Could we do this comfortably in one day if we start early? Should we take a chance on forgoing reservations for a rental car in case the weather is terrible (we are ok to drive on snow and ice). In that case we would take the train.

For the same reasons we want to spend one of our 4 days in Munich with a rental to have a look at the castles (not so interested in inside tour) and exploring Zugsprite, Garmish, etc. we have the same questions re rentals and time.

We thought about taking one night out of Salzburg and driving from Salzburg to Munich with an overnight somewhere between but the drop off rate was too high: 320 euros for 1 day!

As usual, I am wishing we had one more week!

Thank you for your help.
