drive to rome
We will be staying in San Gimignano for a few days in September. We are wondering if we should drive our rental car to Rome or return it and train to Rome. Where should we return it, Florence, Sienna, or somewhere else?

You have good advice on your other thread on this topic. If you are used to driving in busy cities, you should be able to drive into Rome, if you wish. We recently drove out of Rome without any difficulty.
Where are you renting your car from and what other cities do you wish to visit besides S.G. and Rome?

Here is what has worked for me - I would drive into central Rome and find a taxi stand. Send your traveling companion with the address of the car rental agency and the address of your hotel with the cab and let the driver know someone is following. Then follow the cab to the rental agency, turn in your car and put your luggage into the cab and then have the cab take you to your hotel. I have done this numerous times in various large cities with excellent results.

Driving from San Gimignano to Florence will take you about an hour. You have to take into consideration that entering Florence can be a nightmare! Then you'll have to return the car, catch a taxi to the train staion, carry the suitcases to the train. The train is fast, a little over an hour. We do this trip quite often and found it much easier to drive to Rome. It takes about 3 hours (with a short coffee stop). The road is excellent. Driving into Rome is no problem. It is a big city, but the streets are wide. Most of the rental companies are in located in the Termini (train station). Very easy to find with a good street map of Rome. From there we take a taxi to the hotel, or a bus if we have no luggage.
