We will be staying in a cottage in the Ft. William area, and will be driving from there to near Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales. Via Michelin times the trip at about 6 1/2 hrs. but I know that's probably and underestimate. Our trip will be in mid-October, when the days are shorter, so I'm wondering if it would be wiser to break the trip up into two days.
So, would this drive be too long for one day? If so, do you have any suggestions of where to break up the journey?
Thanks for your help.

Well, the trip could easily be done in a day - we live in the Yorkshire Dales and we've done the trip the other way round many times when we've holidayed in or around Fort William. But then we are obviously used to driving in this country and doing long trips. Are you?
As for staying somewhere on the way down - I really love Glasgow but you may want to get a bit further south on your first day, so how about the northern Lake District as you go down the M6?
Then the following day you could spend up to early afternoon having a quick look at the Lakes, maybe drive to Keswick, and then it would be an easy drive across to Skipton. Here's a suggestion of somewhere to stay. www.georgeanddragonclifton.co.uk
The main road from Penrith to Keswick is beautiful, and a quick detour off would take you to Castlerigg Stone Circle.

Morgana, thanks so much for your reply. We do roadtrips here at home and have driven in England on one trip to Sussex and the Cotswolds in 2004. The round-abouts stand out in my memory as being the most tricky part. Once on the motorway, we did fine.
It's good to know we could do the drive in one day if we want an additional night in Scotland, but I love your idea about stopping off on the edge of the Lake District. The George and Dragon looks lovely! Thanks so much for the recommendation.
