drinking water in Italy
will I get a really bad belly ache if I drink tap water in Rome, Florence, and Venice.
can only imagine how expensive bottle water could be -- love wine -- but not for an entire day --

Why would you get a belly ached drinking the water in Italy? There are public fountains all over Rome (less so Venice & Florence) where you can fill up your 0.5l bottle with cool running water, so there is no need to carry more than 1 small bottle the entire trip.

Yes the point is that water in Rome could be even safer than yours at home - due to the common European water processing via the Ozone (?) type method that is superior to many systems in US and to which many US systems are changing - i learned this on a tour of my local water plant just after the changeover.
That said, some hotels may have lead pipes so let the water run a bit or perhaps use bottled water in lieu of hotel water.
