Dress code in Baden Baden Casino

Hi, I am reading that jacket is required for men. Is it really true? Would shirt and tie suffice? Don't really want to pack a jacket for my husband just for this one occasion. Please advise.

If you consult the casino's web page (using Google translate if necessary) you will learn that unless you only want to play slots a jacket and tie are required, but you can hire one there for a "small fee".

I can not answer to your question as we were not there in the evening, but I want to make a suggestion. We visited the Casino in the morning, when you can take a tour of it with a guide. It is very interesting and you receive a lot of info about the history of the place, about many pictures and statues which are displayed, about the architecture of the halls, etc.
Even you will go in the evening for gambling, I think that it is a good idea to spend one hour in the morning taking this tour.

If it says that a jacket is required, why would you think it was not?

Or you could do what we did once at university. Jacket and tie were required for dinner, but not trousers or shirts. So we all turned up in jackets, ties, and boxer shorts. How often must the poor staff had e had to put up with that?

Thanks! Sometimes when it say jacket is required it is not really enforced. I hoped this is the case here as well. We might stop for a tour in the morning but wanted to go in the evening as well to see casino 'in action'

I will most certainly be enforced.
It is one of the most upscale casinos in the country, and a jacket + shirt + tie is a MUST.
But as PP said, missing items can be rented for the night.

for others who may just want to see this world-famous watering hole of the rich and famous and royals in the late 1800s but do not want to formally attire themselves there are tours of the main ornate gaming room around 11am each day - before the casino opens - I took the tour and it was wonderful - even if going at night take the morning tour!

"Sometimes when it say jacket is required it is not really enforced."

Requiring jacket and tie is extremely uncommon in Germany. I think the casino in Baden-Baden is the only place I've ever been where this was the case but I don't think they make any compromises.

If you don't want to rent a jacket, an idea might be that the casino won't bat an eye about a less than perfect jacket as long as it isn't an obvious joke. If you have one that you want to throw away anyway, take it for the casino and throw it away afterwards to make space in your suitcase.

Casinos in europe are much different than in the US - and in many you are limited to a separate room for slots only if you won;t go to the trouble of dressing properly. Also be prepared for high limits for the table games.

Do realize that they are trying to be exclusive - it's not Atlantic City.

I think nytraveler sums it up nicely.
The whole "concept" is different than in Vegas or other legal casinos in the US.
Here you (usually) have no free flow of people through many entrances but it's more like going to the Opera with one main entrance where you buy the entrance fee (if applicable), get your ID checked, check your coats, and then enter the main gambling rooms.
You won't need a high-end James Bond black tie style outfit to get in, but I doubt you will feel too comfortable in the oldest, ready to throw-away jacket.

If I had to choose an outfit, and wasn't in for the whole suit & tie combo, I'd wear non-trainers shoes, non-jeans pants, shirt & tie, and a sports jacket. Aside from the tie, the style would be business casual and not necessary formal.
I haven't checked the Casino Baden-Baden website, but it would not be uncommon for them to offer "suggestions" for outfits in addition to their "musts".

Here's another part of that enforcement concept. There will undoubtedly be plenty of people who DID "pack a jacket" and they are not gonna be real happy if that dress code they made allowances for and took the time to meet isn't enforced for everybody.

I don't know about the casino, but my father was kicked off the (little better than a cow pasture) golf course for wearing shorts!
